Russell Lee Barnes
Passed: Monday June 17, 2013

Russell Lee Barnes, born in Uniontown, PA and recently from Bethesda, MD passed away on June 17, 2013 in a Pittsburgh hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was 69. Russ was a published writer and playwright. His career included teaching English at Westminster College, serving as a Director of Marketing for Time-Warner Cable, and working as a Director of Public Relations for the Delta Queen Streamboat Company. Additionally, he served as an executive contractor for high-tech and venture capital companies. As a journalist, Mr. Barnes’ publications included a variety of topics such as healthcare, technology, and religion. Early in his writing career, Mr. Barnes published a series of articles in The Pittsburgh Press (now the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) called “Modern Saga of Mon River." For this, as well as his other writings, including his essay entitled “The Theology of Jackie Gleason,” see his website at http://home.earthlink.net/~rbarnes7/Bio.htm As a playwright Mr. Barnes wrote and staged "Red Dog Dirt," (aka “The Captain Ruh Club”), a play based on his memories of growing up in Uniontown, PA in the 1950s and 1960s. He recently published an eBook called Dating After Fifty. He received a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Barnes loved many things, some of which included cooking, growing plants, talks with friends and family, riding his bike, teaching, boats and the sea, jazz and blues, animals, the desert, and adventures. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Cluss and his parents Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Barnes. He is survived by his partner Anne Tongren from Bethesda, MD, daughter Sharon Barnes Rubinstein and son-in-law Dean Rubinstein from San Francisco, brother Douglas Barnes from Washington, DC and sister Beth Barnes from Morgantown, WV. On Friday June 21, 2013 friends and family will be received from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Andrew D. Ferguson Funeral Home, 80 Morgantown Street, Uniontown, PA. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 60 Morgantown St., Uniontown, PA at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 22, 2013. There will be a one hour visitation before the service. In lieu of flowers please make donations via check to Grace Episcopal Church, “Rector’s Discretionary Fund,” 1041 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20007. Or donate to the Russell L.
