Donald Lee Alexander, Sr.
Passed: Thursday September 18, 2014

Donald Lee Alexander, Sr., died September 18, 2014 in Williamsburg, VA. He was 72. He was born on October 18, 1941 in Uniontown, PA and spent much of his life in Cumberland, MD. He and his wife, Alice, moved to Williamsburg, VA to spend their retirement near their children and grandchildren and to enjoy living on the James River. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Antoinette Concilis Alexander of Uniontown, PA and his sister, Beatrice of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Don was a graduate of South Union High School with the class of 1959 in Uniontown, PA, and earned BS, MS, and EdD degrees from West Virginia University. He was a Fellow of the American Council on Education. A lifelong educator, Don began his teaching career in the science department of the Montgomery County Maryland public school system. He was a professor of Geology at West Liberty State College in West Virginia. Don spent much of his academic career at Allegany College of Maryland in Cumberland, MD where he began in Institutional Research. He then became the Dean of Academic Affairs and served the college with distinction as President from 1980 – 2008. During his tenure as President of Allegany College of Maryland, Don and his team developed two Pennsylvania campuses, developed numerous academic and career programs, and brought residential life to the Maryland campus. Don was a generous with his time and talents. He served as the President of the Cumberland, MD Rotary Club, President of the Cumberland, MD Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Parish Council at St. Patrick’s Church, Chairman of the Memorial Hospital Board, Chair of the Western Maryland Heath System Board, a member of the Greater Cumberland Maryland Committee, and the Secretary of the Finance Committee of St. Bede Church in Williamsburg, VA. Don will be forever known for his sense of humor, for his kindness and compassion, for his respect for all people, and for his love of his entire family. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Alice, nee Crayton; son Don Alexander, Jr., and his wife, Heather of Richmond, VA; daughter Deb Ambrose and her husband, Jeff of Williamsburg, VA; three grandchildren, Emily Alexander, Ryan Alexander, and Alex Ambrose; brother Ray Alexander and his wife, Judy of Tallahassee, FL; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Arrangements have been entrusted to the ANDREW D. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 80 Morgantown St., Uniontown, PA, where the family will receive friends on Thursday from 2 PM until 4 PM and 7 PM until 9 PM. Visitation will continue on Friday, September 26, 2014 in the funeral home from 8:30 until 9:15 when a parish wake service will be held. A funeral mass celebrating Don’s life will be held in Saint Therese de Lieux Roman Catholic Church at 10 AM with Msgr. Michael W. Matusak as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery Chapel of Memories. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at adferguson.com.
